Must we make a choice between Property and Self-Governance?
When nearly 60 million Americans are violating a law,
any law, it is hard to call it democracy. At first glance the Digital Age appears to present a no win choice: either
(i) give up on the concept of Property itself by abandoning property law and legalizing downloading, or (ii) crack down on
the millions of people, mostly young adults, against their will. Such enforcement could hardly be claimed to be the
will of the governed, since 4 out of 5 of young Americans have not voted in recent off-year elections.
Americans must find a way to have both Property and Self
Government
Instead of the parties fighting for either TOTAL CONTROL or NO CONTROL
of copyrights, America needs a solution that obtains an appropriate balance in between.
